“Uniform paths don’t exist” – true inclusivity embraces the uniqueness of every individual’s journey. This International Men’s Day, we’re highlighting the remarkable men who contribute so much to our team, each bringing their own story of resilience and growth. Discover more about their experiences, the obstacles they’ve faced, and the meaningful change they inspire in our lives.
Though not related by blood, I am privileged to call him Uncle. He has been a constant in my life from the day I was born. Along with his wife, he was our dedicated family doctor, offering care and community after immigrating from Pakistan to New Zealand. Their family practice in a multicultural part of Wellington welcomed everyone, regardless of their financial situation.
Their compassion extended to free consultations, shared meals, and warm conversations over tea. His devotion earned him the Queen’s Service Order, recognising his extraordinary contributions.
With my mother, he co-founded the New Zealand Interfaith Council, promoting peace and cultural understanding. He believed that faith meant sharing the whole truth—peace and harmony for all. His words and example have inspired me deeply, and I cherish our bond.
My Dad is my greatest inspiration because he has overcome immense challenges with resilience and determination. Losing his father at a young age and growing up without the opportunity for a formal education, he faced obstacles that could have easily deterred him. Yet, with courage and the strength of a lion, he carved out a path for himself, eventually managing multiple companies through sheer hard work and dedication. His journey is a testament to his grit and tenacity, qualities that I admire deeply.
Despite his own hardships, my dad has always been committed to providing me with the opportunities he never had. He strives to give me a life filled with support, education, and experiences, encouraging me to dream big and work hard to achieve my goals. His sacrifices and love have instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and motivation to honour his legacy. He inspires me every day to persevere and to make the most of the opportunities he has worked so hard to create for me.
With November being remembrance month, I’ve cast away the famous and put in focus my late father, dad – Leon.
He instilled in me the importance of being “transparent; to treat others like I wanted to be treated myself” and most importantly, how valuable family is with his phrase “ignore the crowd as family always comes first”. How he lived his life has inspired me to keep on the right road with strong values”.
Scott SK Miller is a Hip-Hop artist from Missouri, America who has absolutely phenomenal vibes. His music is inspirational, uplifting, and absolutely unique. His musical work is genius and has the air of an uncle, father, or brother passing on advice on how to be a better person.
Stan Rothbart, our uncle, was a force majeure, a man who literally shaped the lives of people around him like the wind shapes a landscape, gently, with unwavering love, compassion, wisdom and generosity. His sage advice, influence and guidance had an enormous effect on me from the tender age of 16 when I first met him.
Stan was a fighter, a warrior for his clients. His work as an attorney in South Africa, especially in improving access to healthcare and protecting small businesses, left a profound impact. Despite not holding a formal law degree, his expertise and reputation were so remarkable that he was invited to become a judge. He fought for those who needed him, using his talents to solve complex problems and make a real difference in the lives of others.
Stan’s heart extended beyond his professional life. He gave back to his community with time, effort, and charity, supporting individuals and organisations. His strong principles guided him, and while he was firm in his beliefs, he nurtured and cared for his friends, colleagues, and employees.
Stan’s life was full-of love, laughter, and purpose. He touched so many lives and created a legacy of strength, generosity, and unwavering commitment to those he cared for. I will forever feel honoured and proud to have been able to call him my uncle.
My Grandfather, or my Pops, has and will always be my role model. From a child of an immigrant family, he has built a loving family, beautiful homes and is responsible for the happiest memories of my childhood.
My Pops has never failed to do the morally right thing, and his wisdom, sharp wit, and infectious humour is only outmatched by his unwavering humility. I couldn’t be prouder or luckier to be his granddaughter. He has shaped who I am in ways words can’t even capture.
